The Irish Manuscripts Collection consists of papers documenting approximately 190 influential Irish men and women from military, religious, political arenas. The collection also contains several Irish and Irish-American newspapers, primarily from the mid-19th century. Selected letters and documents from prominent persons and governmental bodies include Memoirs of the House of Ormonde (history and family pedigree); Irish Land Commission's 1859 dissolution of the Lamberton Park estate; signature of labor leader Michael Davitt; several autographed, signed letters dated from 1851 to 1918 for the first three Earls of Drogheda; an 1824 letter of John Wilson Croker, 6th Baron De Freyne; an 18-line letter, dated 1905, from Sir Horace Curzon Plunkett; a letter of gratitude from Henry Grattan; an 1833 engraving and a 1932 letter from Viscount Clifden; a 13-line letter and other letters from the Marquis of Sligo; a 32-line letter from Right Honorable Sir George Trevelyan; land documents of Lord Palmerston; a 36-line letter, dated 1859, from George Petrie; and a typescript of a foreword written by Sean O' Faolain for Anthony Trollope's The Warden; and many other notable documents.

Seán O'Faoláin was born John Whelan in County Cork, Ireland; he came from a loyalist family, and initally opposed the Easter Rebellion of 1916, but the excessive force used by the British to suppress the rebellion inspired his sense of Irish nationalism.
